Your Family Member is Doing Drugs

You have considered drug testing your child, but are you really prepared?

Let’s Make a Plan

Chances are that you suspect that your family member is using drugs or alcohol or you wouldn’t be on this page. The data suggest that you have reason to be concerned. Do you have a plan to manage that? What about testing? What happens if the test is positive? What happens if the test is negative? Are you frightened and angry that this issue is in your home? Have you ever dealt with a situation like this before? Do you know what to do if there is a strong reaction? Let’s work together to make a plan.

You know your family; your suspicions are probably well-founded

Consult Prior to Testing

“A recent survey of 150,000 parents indicated that they were more worried about their teen using drugs than they were about plague, economic collapse or war.”

Inform/Plan/Engage

We recommend that you engage with a licensed drug and alcohol counselor BEFORE talking to your child. Your counselor can help you prepare yourself for the encounter and provide you with initial guidance around what you might want to do. Testing may be a part of this discussion. We can help you through this, you don’t have to face this alone. Kevin Pangburn, Chief Clinical Officer for Stay Clean, addresses a number of questions that you might have when considering administering a drug test to one of your family members in the brief video below.

Purchase a StayCleanPLAN

A StayCleanPlan includes four sessions with a licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. These sessions can be conducted around your schedule to make it easy to attend and finalize your plan. The cost for a complete StayCleanPlan is $450.00. Your purchase also includes one saliva-based, dual-chamber test kit. This kit will reveal the presence of any of 9 drugs of abuse including alcohol, marijuana, opioids, fentanyl, and others.

When you purchase a StayCleanPlan you can rest assured that we stand behind our service. Our StandardPlan includes four sessions but if you engage with your counselor and determine that you do not want to continue, the balance of your unused sessions will be refunded. If you decide that you would like to stay engaged with your counselor you can continue your relationship by scheduling individual sessions with them directly, giving you complete control over the process.

Our clinicians are of the highest caliber with thousands of interventions as part of their experience. The StayCleanPlan is a process designed to arm you with the skills and tools to achieve a successful intervention. During these sessions, you and your counselor will better understand the situation in your family and develop a specific plan designed to achieve the best possible outcome.

By pressing the button below, you will be taken to the HIPAA secure, telehealth system where you will complete the necessary “paperwork” and schedule your first clinical session.

After you have completed your StayCleanPlan and spoken with your family member, additional sessions can be scheduled with a clinician at any time.

If you have more questions or need more information just give us a call at: 502-861-6661 and we will walk you through the details or if you’re ready to meet your counselor and develop your StayCleanPlan you can use the “Purchase a PLAN!” button to schedule your first appointment.

We Know That You Have Questions…

Conducting a home test for drug use comes with many questions and few informed resources for answers. Kevin Pangburn, Chief Clinical Officer for Stay Clean, answers a series of questions here that you might have already been considering. “Before Testing Your Child” will introduce you to some of the answers that might be useful to you as you begin this journey. “The Test Kit” provides an in-depth view of administering the test itself so that you have a clear understanding of how the actual testing process works. Four Sessions and a Test Kit and More

Each Stay Clean Family Plan is comprised of four sessions with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor as well as one saliva-based test kit but that isn’t all. Your four clinical sessions will be held with your personal clinician. This relationship is yours from your first session until you determine that you feel ready to take the next step with your loved one. Your access to that specific clinician is part of what makes the Stay Clean Plan special.

If you decide that you’d like to continue to see your clinician going forward, you’ll always have the ability to schedule individual sessions as you feel that you need them. Once you’ve reached your goals you and your clinician can work together to determine the best course forward for you and your loved one. It’s reasonable to expect that once you’ve developed your plan you will be able to speak with your loved one and never need to actually use the test kit that is provided.

Questions About Teen Drug Abuse?

At the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), our goal is to help people get accurate, science-based information about drugs and health. For the past decade, researchers at NIDA have set aside a Chat Day each year during National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® to answer questions teens have about drugs and health. We’ve compiled teens' 10 frequently asked questions from more than 118,000 queries we’ve received to help you start a conversation about drugs and health. It’s okay if some of this information is news to you—lots of other people are asking, too!

Signs of Teen Drug and Alcohol Use

Adolescence can be a difficult time.  Learning to navigate this period on one’s own involves difficult behaviors that will, many times, fade away over time.  This makes it difficult to interpret behaviors that may be a normal part of growing up from those that might indicate experimentation with alcohol and/or drugs.  Nonetheless, as a parent it is appropriate to look for those signs and, perhaps, to act on what you see.

We researched a few suggestions from several sources and developed our own list of things to look for in your child.  Taken alone or together they may not indicate anything but normal, teen behavior.  Taken alone or together they might also be signs of a developing issue.  Among others,

  • Defensiveness regarding actions and activities

  • Avoiding contact with family members and others who express concern

  • Attempting to keep actions and activities secret

  • Isolation from family members and increased absence from home

  • Losing interest in activities they once enjoyed

  • Dropping old friends for a new group

  • Lying or providing unrealistic explanations to parents

  • Alcohol that goes missing in the home

  • Unexplained, extreme mood swings, acting despondent, aggressive or angry

  • Dilated pupils and bloodshot eyes

Is this just normal teen behavior?  Is it a sign of something more serious?  Shouldn’t you act regardless?  This might be new to you, but it is not to us.  We can help you through this. Call us today. Don’t hesitate.
